"Knowledge of faith is possible only in the Holy Spirit: to be in touch with Christ, we must first have been touched by the Holy Spirit. He comes to meet us and kindle faith in us." (CCC, 683)
In second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, we read the story of Pentecost. This feast which occurs 50 days after Easter and 10 days after the Ascension of the Lord marks the end of the Easter season. It is also considered by many to be the birthday of the Church, for by in receiving the Holy Spirit, the apostles were given the courage and strength to go on mission for Jesus to spread the Good News. When the tongues of fire rested on those gathered in the upper room, they were able to speak in different languages and had no fear as they spoke about Jesus to anyone who could hear them. Peter, the first pope and leader of the Church, gives a long speech about the wonders of God and tells the people to repent and be baptized in Jesus name. From this momentous day, the apostles go on to live together as a community and to share the News of Jesus across the known world. This is the mission of the Catholic Church, to bring people to Jesus and to walk with them as they get to know Him.
So what can we take away from this? The easiest lesson is that we are all called to the mission of the Church, to spread the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. Many of us look at the apostles who are speaking in tongues and converting strangers thinking, "That could never be me!" A few things to consider 1) With the Holy Spirit anything is possible. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you strength, grace, courage, and guidance to be bold for Jesus with those in your life. 2) Maybe you aren't meant to wander the streets shouting Jesus mighty deeds for all to hear. Maybe you're called to live a holy, virtuous life that leaves people wondering where you peace and joy come from. That wonder could lead to them asking questions and a loving conversation might follow about your love for Christ.
