Sacred song forms an integral part of Mass. It becomes
holy by adding delight to prayer, fostering oneness of spirit,
and adding greater solemnity to the celebration. Its
purpose is to glorify God and sanctify the faithful.
(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 112)
The music ministers lead and sustain the assembly in sung
prayer. At the appropriate times the music ministers may
also provide music to support the assembly’s silent prayer.
Our variety of groups allows for a wide range in skill levels.
Choir members should be able to match pitches. The
cantors should possess singing talent and an aptitude for
correct pronunciation and diction. Instrumentalists should
possess a basic level of proficiency for his/her chosen
instrument.
Sing to God—whether in the seats or in the front corner.
St. Paul, in his letters in the New Testament, encourages us
to sing to God from our hearts…All of us. Not just a select
few. God delights in our singing to Him. But apparently
what He delights in is not so much the quality of the voice
as we hear it, but rather the quality of the prayer from the
heart. The music ensemble is not just in the front corner. It
is the entire assembly. The music ministers in the corner
are leading the sung prayer, because they are sharing the
particular musical gifts God has given them.
Has Jesus blessed you with musical talent? Consider His
parable of the talents and use your musical gifts for the
glory of God and the upbuilding of His people. As our
parish—and music space—has grown, our need for music
ministers has grown. The music ministry would love to
welcome you. Singers, sound technicians, those who play
guitar, piano, cello, flute, violin, oboe, trumpet—all
instruments—all are welcome. The parish needs your
musical gifts so that all of us can praise God as God
