Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Greetings to you on this Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time! I hope and pray that all is well for you and your family. Today we especially welcome our new families who are joining us for the first time. We are blessed to be together at this time and at this place. God has us here for a reason.
Mary chose the “better” portion. And Jesus said, she will not be deprived of it. What is the better portion? A couple of weeks ago, I was having dinner with friends in one of my favorite Italian restaurants, and I was sitting next to a family with four growing sons. The sons, the brothers, were arguing over who was going to get the biggest piece of pizza. And this was even before the pizza arrived at their table. Should the oldest get it? Should the largest brother get the big piece? Should the brother who had a baseball game the next morning get it, because he will need the energy? Should the smallest get the biggest piece, to help him grow? While they waited the brothers went through all the possibilities, and reasonable explanations, and justifications for why they should get the biggest piece of pizza. All of these things were hotly debated, so much so, that everyone around them could hear the debate, before the server finally brought the family their food. The dad put an end to the argument, taking the largest slice of pizza, and announcing that he who was going to pay the bill, was entitled to the largest slice, the choice portion. Just a few seconds into their meal, the brothers realized that there was one slice of pizza that had more pepperoni on it than any of the others. And all of a sudden, IT became the choice portion. The debate started all over again, and this time it was mom, who tore off a couple of the slices of pepperoni to redistribute them more evenly across what remained of the pizza, thus ending the second argument. It’s great to have brothers. Although I’ve been assured that sisters will do the same thing. It’s in our families that we learn to choose the “choice” portions: the largest slice of pizza, the biggest scoop of ice cream, the bowl of popcorn that is most full, the glass of soda that has more in it. And it’s all about the comparisons, isn’t it?
